Leixlip Utd 4 Howth Celtic 1

Pole position for the league title was on offer to whomever prevailed today. As they have done all season, the boys stepped up, when it really mattered, with an emphatic performance in arguably their biggest ever game.

Leixlip really could not have started any better. Wonderful CF hold up play by Aiden Doyle ultimately creating space for Ryan Good to tap in after only 4 mins. Huge credit to Celtic however who rallied to make the 1st half a very close affair indeed. Both teams creating opportunities and providing spectators with excellent, individual battles right across the pitch.

The 2nd half continued much the same way until Celtic, not undeservedly, got on to the scoresheet themselves after 15 mins. Leixlip however, responded in perfect fashion. Ruthlessly taking the lead back within a minute via Captain Eoghan Lyons sprinting on to a fantastic Adam Abidoye free kick that caused all sorts of trouble in the Celtic defence.

From this point on Leixlip ratcheted up a clear majority of the chances. Celtic stubbornly held out but the tenacious Cameron McComish finally broke them with a snap shot for Leixlip’s 3rd shortly after.

Leixlip were absolutely flying now and piled on further misery with a 4th, Ryan again, rounding the keeper with aplomb.

The boys saw out the game in full control and soaked up the huge cheers at the final whistle. One win from the final 2 games and they are champions.
